Benefits of Dental Veneers
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are dental products that dentists use to fix the way your teeth look. While veneers can be made from several types of materials, porcelain veneers are usually the most popular. Veneers are not used to replace missing teeth. Instead, dentists place veneers directly over your existing teeth, which means that veneers are very thin and look natural once installed.
During the procedure, a dentist typically starts by preparing your tooth for the veneer. The preparation generally requires shaving off some of the outer parts of the tooth to make room for the veneer to fit over the tooth.
If you choose to get veneers, then you should be aware that the process is permanent. In other words, you cannot undo what a dentist does during the process if you decide that you no longer want veneers.
When Can Dentists Use Them to Fix Teeth?
Dentists use veneers to fix a lot of different problems that people have with their teeth. Before a dentist will recommend a veneer, though, he or she must examine the tooth to make sure it contains enough structure to support a veneer.
Dentists also look closely at the positioning of a tooth before recommending a veneer. Veneers work best on teeth that are positioned properly rather than teeth that are crooked or too far out of position.
If the tooth is strong enough to support the veneer, a dentist can place a veneer over the tooth to fix the following problems:
- Discoloration of teeth. When professional whitening is not an effective treatment option for tooth-whitening, you could have a dentist place veneers over your teeth to make them whiter.
- Short teeth. People with short teeth often feel embarrassed by the way their teeth look, and dentists can lengthen your teeth, if necessary, by placing veneers over them.
- Chipped teeth. Dentists also recommend veneers to fix chipped or cracked teeth. After placing a veneer over a broken tooth, you will never know it was chipped or cracked.
- Gaps between teeth. If a dentist makes veneers wider than your actual teeth, he or she could fill in the gap you have between two teeth with the use of dental veneers.
Dentists use veneers for a lot of different reasons and purposes. So if you think they could help you, just ask your dentist about your options.
What Benefits Do Veneers Offer?
When you have any cosmetic dental issues, a dentist might be able to fix these problems with something other than dental veneers. For example, dentists often use composite bonding to fix similar issues as mentioned above. Unfortunately, composite bonding is not as strong as veneers. Bonding will not last nearly as long as veneers and may not look as natural either.
Dental veneers are the best option for fixing most cosmetic issues with teeth. Veneers look more natural than other options and last longer than other options.
