Superior level of personalized & comfortable dental care

Cosmetic Dentistry is one of the top-grossing dental procedures of today’s time. Now people have started investing in their smiles too.

A smile is incomplete without a full set of teeth. And to restore your smile back, you need to get back what you have lost.

Worry no more! For you can get back the lost teeth with the process of dental implants.

There are many types of dental implant treatments which you can go through to replace your missing teeth.

We can broadly classify implants into two types – Mini Dental Implants and Traditional Dental Implants.

Basically, traditional dental implants are larger than mini dental implants and hence provide a more stable, long-term solution. But these dental implants demand a sufficient jawbone tissue for support as well. So, patients having jawbone atrophy need to stop thinking about the traditional dental implants.

Fortunately, here’s where mini dental implants come to help. As the name suggests, mini dental implants are smaller in diameter and may not require much healthy tissue and have the capability to restore a single tooth or whole of the arc without any preliminary treatment.

Knowing the Differences Between Conventional Dental Implant and Mini Dental Implant

In the smile restoration, dental implants have the role in replacing the missing teeth. Though both traditional and mini dental implants serve the same purpose, still there is an oceanic difference between both. Let’s look at the differences in detail.

Size of Implant

Mini dental implants are noticeably smaller in diameter than the traditional or conventional dental implants. Where conventional dental implants range from 3.5mm to 6mm, mini dental implants stand between the range 2mm to 3.5mm wide.

Due to the smaller size, mini dental implants have less impact on the jawbone and hence require less support of the bone. A coin always has two sides. So if a mini dental implant is smaller in size, it may not be as stable as traditional dental implants. As a result, mini dental implants can create a great risk of implant failure.

Shape of Implant

Traditional or conventional dental implants have two pieces: a post and an abutment. The abutment helps to connect the implant to the restoration. Whereas, in case of a mini implant, it is a one piece solid screw which consists of a post and a ball-shaped end that ascends above the gum line. Restorations made for mini dental implants are fabricated with an O ring made of rubber which fits around the ball.

Now the question arises that which implant is suitable for you. Each type of dental implant has its own pros and cons.

Traditional dental implants are suitable to those who have a strong and sturdy jawbone. As stated earlier, jawbone atrophy can cause complications and hence weaken your implants. If you have a bone degeneration after the tooth loss, you might first have to go through a bone graft to resurrect the integrity of your jaw. You may also need a sinus lift if recession of bone has given adverse effects to the height of your sinus floor.

On the other hand, mini implants do not require much jawbone tissue for the support. Patients with a receding jawbone are eligible for mini dental implants and can go through the treatment without any preliminary procedures. But, mini dental implants are not stronger which makes them not suitable to those who struggle with the teeth grinding and clenching. This can put a great pressure on teeth and can weaken the implant after some time.

Now the question arises that which implant is suitable for you. Each type of dental implant has its own pros and cons.

Mini implants offer a lot of conveniences as they can be placed in a single office visit only. Whereas, traditional implants require two procedures. The first surgery is very extensive as your doctor needs to create a larger pilot hole for the implant posts. The second surgery is minor and deals with assemblage of the abutment.

Recovery and Restoration

A traditional dental implant is relatively a longer procedure than the mini dental implants and takes a considerably long time to recover. You need to wait for six to nine months for your jaw to heal before the implants could be placed in case you need a bone grafting or sinus lift. After the implant surgery, you need to wait for another three to six months to make the post integrate with surrounding tissues prior to receiving your restoration.

As mini dental implants do not require any preliminary setups, the timeline of treatment is significantly less. Some patients can also receive a temporary restoration on the same day as treatment. With same day restorations, patients can get a renewed dental function along with a boost of confidence and shine in the smile in a single day.

Mini dental implants are far cheaper than the traditional dental implants as they are smaller and made with less material. However, you might need more than one mini implant to support a larger restoration. Hence, it is a pivot to consider the complexity of the treatment, materials used and even your dental surgeon’s experience while calculating the costs.
